Core 40 and Advanced Certification

Indiana State law states: “A victim has the right to be treated with fairness, dignity, and respect throughout the criminal justice process.” (Sec. 1. IC 35-40-5-1 As added by P.L.139-1999, SEC.1)

This core advocacy class will teach individuals new to the profession of sexual violence victim advocacy the basic components. The core objectives include increasing the basic knowledge of the Indiana Criminal Investigative process, by an understanding of the law enforcement investigation, sexual assault forensic evidence collection, Indiana Criminal Justice Institute’s payment of the forensic evidence collection through the sex crime compensation and payment on injuries under violent crime compensation . The class will also increase the knowledge of advocates by introducing basic level cultural competency, working with the media, adult protective services, immediate and long term reactions to trauma and secondary victimization. These short term objectives are brought together through the role of the victim advocate teaching crisis intervention skills, victim empowerment, and communicating with the victim of a sex crime. The class is offered one time per year usually in June and July. This training does not offer continuing legal education credits. This training program is designed to meet the basic requirements for advocates who will be seeking certification as it becomes available in Indiana. No continuing education credits/units are granted for this training. Certificate of completion given.
